Schedule details

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Meeting point: In front of the Arts Centre Santa Mònica, Rambla de Santa Mònica 7, (Metro Line L3, Station “Drassanes”)
  • Starting time: 5.30 PM
  • Ending point: Barcelona Parallel Street next to Metro Station “Parallel” (Metro Lines L2 + L3)
  • Chevron down Full Itinerary
  • Meet your English-speaking guide in front of the Art Centre Santa Monica at the bottom of the Ramblas (Metro Station ‘Drassanes’) before setting off on a Barcelona food tour like no other.

We take you away from the touristy spots and into local neighbourhoods, like the once notorious no-go-area Raval, which nowadays features a unique blend of ambitious, new architectural projects with the traditional, multi-ethnic life of the barrio. Just a stone’s throw away, you enjoy the first tapas experience of the night at a cosy little terrace bar, where you can pick up a pintxo of butifarra or some salmorejo, two truly traditional and tasty dishes.

The next tapas bar awaits us and we navigate our way through a labyrinth of small streets that still retain their old-world ambience. Our next stop on this tapas tour of Barcelona is a warm bodega (wine cellar) with exquisite ham and cheese, and you experience these tasty flavours accompanied by a nice white or red wine (as you do!). From there, our tour continues as we cross the Rambla de Raval, the multicultural heart of the Raval, and have a look at the cat sculpture of the Columbian artist Fernando Botero.

Next up on our Barcelona tapas tour is a typical Vermuteria, where you can have a vermut (vermouth) or tinto de verano (think sangría, but simpler) and indulge in a Spanish omelette. On the way to the adjacent neighbourhood of Poble Sec we cross Parallel, once known for its Montmartre-style entertainment, which is still cluttered with theatres, music venues, and cabarets. Poble Sec is attached to the Montjuic, Barcelona’s emblematic hillside. Still very central, it combines the charm of a lively neighbourhood with an authentic local feel away from the main tourist trails. Our next stop is a vibrant bodega, where you can choose your favourite Basque pintxo and top it all off with a glass of cava.

Throughout this Barcelona tour, as you delight in the discovery of new tastes, flavours and dishes, your guide gives you insights into local gastronomic specialties and anecdotes of the city’s history and local neighbourhood life. Eating tapas is one of the best things to do in Barcelona, no doubt about that, and a great way to connect with the daily lives of the locals. At some point during this tour, you’re likely to meet some of the local characters in the barrio and perhaps even get drawn into a conversation or two. You never know what the night has in store!

This was my second Urban adventure. Both consistent in style and enthusiasm. For a solo traveller it’s a great way to sample the delights of places as well as meeting like-minded souls who are keen to ‘go local’
The bonus is having a guide ( looking at you Eddie!) who displays a genuine passion for their city and is proud to share it.

You should be very proud of the way Alicia represented your company

Ms. Gwendolyn D. from Canada travelled on 18 Apr 2017:

We had an excellent tour with our guide, Alicia (spelling may not be correct) on April 7. We were fortunate that we only had two people in the group so it felt very personalized. On the other hand, a larger group would also have been helpful…. others may have been able to contribute to a rich experience as well. We actually went back to one of the ‘stops’ along the way on the following Monday, however, that location was closed that day. Nevertheless, because we were in the neighborhood (barrio), we found another absolutely fantastic place for dinner, which we would not have discovered without the Urban Adventure experience. Thank you!

Mr. David S. from United Kingdom travelled on 05 Apr 2017:

Mr. Kathi S. from Canada travelled on 27 Mar 2017:

Our guide Alicia was fantastic. She had a bubbly personality and was very knowledgable of the area. The tapas bars and pubs chosen were all distinctly different and each was a learning and gastronomic experience. I can’t recommend it highly enough. One of the highlights of my trip!

Ms. Natalie B. from USA travelled on 24 Oct 2016:

Matthias was wonderful! Definitely enthusiastic and knowledgeable, but also interesting to get to know and an overall cool guy. Not only that, everyone in the group was awesome; a few of us even went to one more bar together after the tour was over. The food and wine were fabulous, and I really loved that we didn’t stick to the beaten path. I felt like I saw more of the real Barcelona.

Love this tour and all the Urban Adventures Tours. Such a great way to learn about a city from the people who live in it. A wonderful way to learn about hidden gems, history and culture.

Ms. Claire A. from United Kingdom travelled on 25 Jul 2016:

Fantastic tour and gave us a real insight into Catalan Culture and, for us, most importantly the food!! Our guide Alicia was brilliant, taking us to some great Tapas Bars away from the typically tourist areas and made sure we all had a choice of different tapas and drinks to choose from. Alicia also ensured she spent time talking to everyone in the group individually, giving everyone personal tips tp enable we all got the most of our time in Barcelona and the region she clearly was so passionate about!

Mr. Jean Marie K. from Australia travelled on 16 Jul 2016:

The guide, Alethea, was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Spent time with everyone. The tour was like a great night out with friends. Last year, I booked two Urban adventure walking tours in Lisbon and loved them.

Terrific tour guide. Great range of tapas and beverages.

Ms. Neena K. from United Kingdom travelled on 15 Nov 2015:

Ah what a great introduction to the food and drink culture of Barcelona with a great guide and such a fun group. The tapas and the drinks were plenty so don’t eat beforehand…you won’t go hungry on this adventure! I got to learn the ropes of what and how to order at the bars, from which drinks to keeping the cocktail sticks (used to determine your bill). As I was in Barcelona for 10 nights this was a great starter and gave me confidence when going to tapas bars myself. So if you’re in Barcelona…book this adventure!

Ms. Monica S. from Germany travelled on 04 Nov 2015:

    Alicia did a fantastic Job!

Ms. Nancy B. from USA travelled on 18 Aug 2015:

Our tour guide, Aletha, did a fantastic job of shepherding us through the lesser known streets of Barcelona. Getting off La Rambla and back into some real neighborhoods was refreshing and fun. We visited four different tapas bars, each with its own style and flavors. Our favorite was Blai 9 with the stunning displays of pinchots lining the bar/buffet for you to choose from. Also got to sample some of the Cava and Spanish vermouth which were very tasty. We had a great group of people from all over – New Zealand, Hong Kong, NY, etc which made for lively conversation. We did run late by almost an hour because everyone was so engaged and having such a great time. Highly recommend this adventure!

Mr. mark d. from USA travelled on 12 Aug 2015:

Our guide Alicia was fantastic; enthusiastic, engaging and knowledgeable

Ms. Kristy H. from USA travelled on 13 Jun 2015:

Great tour – especially enjoyed visit to Poble Sec neighborhood as I would not have ventured there on my own.

Ms. Danielle B. from Australia travelled on 10 Jun 2015:

Alicia was fantastic! Super enthusiastic and we were able to try an awesome variety of food and drinks across the evening. The pace of the tour was excellent with plenty of time to leisurely enjoy our surroundings at each stop. Would definitely recommend to anyone travelling to Barcelona!

Ms. Athena D. from Australia travelled on 21 May 2015:

We enjoyed this tour that allowed us to explore off the beaten tourist track. It was a fantastic experience to have a drink and dine where the locals dine – places we wouldn’t have discovered on our own. Our guide had excellent cultural and historical knowledge and made us feel very comfortable.

Mr. Charles L. from United Kingdom travelled on 16 Apr 2015:

Thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Thank you Alicia for making it so successful and going the extra mile to ensure we could take part.

Ms. Sarah E. from New Zealand travelled on 12 Apr 2015:

Alicia was excellent – right on time, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Great background into Barcelona and the food

Mr. Peter O. from United Kingdom travelled on 28 Mar 2015:

Dago’s knowledge and enthusiasm was just what I needed to start a visit to Barcelona and provided the insight into the food and local sights en-route ready for my week ahead. I was the only person on this tour but that didn’t have any bearing on what we did.

Mr. Anne M. from Australia travelled on 25 Oct 2014:

Fantastic tour, our guide Alicia was so knowledgeable, enthusiastic and good fun. Everyone was catered for and she was a most attentive host. Our first Urban Adventure and we loved it.

Ms. Kim S. from Canada travelled on 04 Sep 2014:

Great tour. Had fantastic time discovering Barcelona, the tapas and wine were awesome!

Mrs. Sarah G. from United Kingdom travelled on 12 Aug 2014:

We had done a similar tour on our trip to Venice but had been unable to do this until the end of our stay which meant that we had very little time to go back to the places that we visited. This time we decided to arrange this for our first evening in Barcelona. Our guide was very friendly and gave us lots of information about local culture, food and drinks. She gave us her recommendations at each stop. Each and every one of these were delicious.
A brilliant tour that I would highly recommend to friends and family!

Mr. ira g. from USA travelled on 06 Jul 2014:

Last year we took your Ciccetti Tour in Venice and enjoyed it and Cecelia so much that we booked your Tapas tour in Barcelona and could not have been happier. Alecia was as interesting and well versed as Cecilia so we are very happy with our decision.
    Thank you

Mrs. Sarah G. from Australia travelled on 20 Jun 2014:

The guide Ali was excellent! She made everyone feel comfortable. She stayed much later than the set time which allowed us to visit an extra pin is bar! What a great guide

Ms. Therese O. from USA travelled on 15 Oct 2013:

Initially I was disappointed to have a German guide in Barcelona, but Mathias had lived there for years and had really done his homework. Definitely took us to non-tourist areas, and gave us a lot of extra historical and cultural information.

Mr. Scott S. from USA travelled on 27 Sep 2013:

Enrique did a wonderful job guiding us to three tapas bars and sharing interesting historical and cultural facts along the way. We saw a part of Barcelona that we would have otherwise missed and ended up going back to an area he recommended for lunch the next day

Mr. Lucas M. from travelled on 07 Sep 2013:

The other couple didn’t turn up, so we were able to really go into the non tourist areas, eat and drink like the locals

Mrs. Susanne S. from Germany travelled on 01 May 2013:

Our guide, Matthias, was great. It was fun to spent the time with him. The only negative thing to mention was the female employee from urban adventures who was on the phone when I called because the guide was late. She was very impolite and unfriendly and not willing to help. Fortunately the guide arrived after a while and explained his lateness. He just extended the tour which wasn’t a problem for the participants.I would suggest that urban adventure leaves the phone number from the guide in future than we don’t bother the female employee.
