Torre Agbar Building
Torre Agbar is located in the new Barcelona city centre technological park. It was built under the French architect Jean Nouvel and was inaugurated in January 2005 after more than five years of construction. It is the office building of the local water company “Aigües de Barcelona”. Unusual shape and colour are the main features of this building.
It is not the typical North-American skyscraper. The tower was inspired by the nearby mystic mountain Montserrat with its bizarre formations. The building emerges in a somewhat phallic shape from the ground, although Nouvel intended it to look like a geyser. The striking structure is covered with a facade of glass, and over 4,500 window openings were cut out of the structural concrete. A defining feature of the building is its nocturnal illumination. It has 4,500 LED luminous devices that allow the generation of luminous images in the façade. In addition, it has temperature sensors on the outside of the tower that regulate the opening and closing of the window blinds of the façade of the building, reducing the consumption of energy for air conditioning.
