A strong sense of identity has never ceased to exist in Catalonia. Seny could also be translated as common sense and the opposite would be rauxa, an aspect that comes out once in a while and could be described as chaos or foolish recklessness. In Catalonia you usually find the two elements together (even in one person): hardworking and skilful craftsmen, modest and diplomatic politicians, clever businesspeople and on the other side creative, chaotic, impulsive artists like Miró, Dalí and Gaudí. These artists started developing technical skills and talent with materials (seny) but then kind of lost control when letting out their imagination and artistic ambition. Normally a Catalan would retain this side of his character when dealing with business affairs.
